Why is Exercise important post orthopaedic surgery?
Whether you have suffered a bone injury and required surgery to fix it; or have had or awaiting a joint replacement, exercise is one of the most important things you can do.
We can start losing muscle mass as quickly as 24 hours if we don't mobilise. Exercise is tremendously important in strengthening our muscles to support the affected area and enable us to get back to what we enjoy doing the most. Strengthening our muscles can also be beneficial in reducing pain musculoskeletal pain and discomfort.
Why is exercise therapy important pre orthopaedic surgery?
Exercise is important in general and if you are awaiting joint replacement in particular, it is even more important that you exercise beforehand.
Exercising that specific area helps build muscle around the joint and in that particular area of your body which will help reduce pain and should help shorten your recovery time. This is due to your muscles being stronger and in better condition to help stabilise your new joint.
Why is manual therapy important?
Manual therapy can involve a wide variety of techniques such as joint mobilisations, massage, myofascial release, muscle energy techniques and more.
Whether its pre or post surgery; our muscles and joints are going to need some looking after.
Here are some aspects that manual therapy will help you with:
- Reducing pain.
- Increasing mobility.
- Improving tissue extensibility and stability.
- Reduce muscle tension.
Exercise and Manual Therapy Combined
We have found with a number of our clients over the years that combining both manual therapy techniques and exercise together in someones treatment and rehabilitation can provide fantastic results. This can be relieving someones pain, increasing their range of movement or getting them back to full fitness quicker.
At times, both modalities combined are not always appropriate or beneficial at that time in your treatment or rehabilitation.
Rest assured though, your therapist will work closely with you throughout your journey making sure that you receive the best support and treatment tailored to your specific needs.
